Oakwell has been home to Barnsley Football Club since they were formed in 1887, but like most grounds has seen significant redevelopment in the last 30 years. One side, the West Stand, is one of the few surviving stands designed by the famed stadium architect Archibald Leitch. Dating to the early 1900s it is one of his earlier works.

The record attendance at Oakwell was set in 1936 when 40,225 witnessed the Second Division hosts overcome Division One side Stoke City 2-1 in the 5th round of the FA Cup. The grounds current capacity is 23,287.
