Croydon Athletic
59 pictures and a brief history
Croydon Athletic Football Club were formed in 1986 as a result of a merger between Wandsworth Football Club and Norwood Football Club, being known as Wandsworth & Norwood FC until 1990, when they took on the name Croydon Athletic. After several years in the London Spartan League the club were elected to the Isthmian League, joining Division 3 for the 1997/98 season and winning the title in 2001/02. Following the reorganisation of the Isthmian League, the club were placed in Division One South for the 2002/03 season and remained at this level until 2009/10 when they won the league and promotion to the Premier Division.
Unfortunately they had attracted the attention of a property developer, later jailed for his involvement in the Pakistan cricket spot-fixing scandal, who had bought the club in 2008 with the sole purpose of using it as a money laundering vehicle. The fall out was the departure of the management team, followed by an exodus of players, postponed matches, points deductions, relegation and the eventual demise of the club. Most shockingly of all was the death of the clubs chairman, found in a garage with a single bullet wound to the head, a fatal injury which was deemed to have been self-inflicted.
Fans reformed the Club as AFC Croydon Athletic and after a couple of years sharing with neighbours Croydon at the Croydon Sports Arena they were able to return to the Mayfield Stadium, also known as the Keith Tuckey stadium after the clubs chairman from 1986 until 2006, in 2014. Banstead Athletic were the first visitors on 15 November.
The reformed club initially played in Division One of the Combined Counties League, winning promotion in 2014/15, an event which saw a lateral move to the South Eastern Counties Premier Division for 6 seasons before a reorganisation ahead of the 2021/22 season saw them move back the Combined Counties League, to the Premier Division South. In 2023/24 they finished 5th, so qualifying for the play offs where they defeated Jersey Bulls in the semi final before beating Knaphill in the final to secure a place in the Isthmian League South East Division for the 2024/25 season. This success followed a takeover of the club by a consortium including the rapper Stormzy and former Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha, for whom Thornton Heath had been home since the age of 4.
I've been unable to find any details of a definitive record attendance at the stadium, but the highest league crowd since the clubs formation was the 208 who witnessed the visit of Tooting and Mitcham on 20 February 2024. The grounds current capacity is 3,000, 300 of which are seats.
