Ramsgate Town Football Club were formed by 1886 and it seems that they have been playing at least some of their home games at Southwood from the first incarnation. It is also recorded that, in the late 19th century, Ramsgate Athletic were also playing matches here. By the time football recommenced in East Kent after the First World War, the club had dropped 'Town' from their name and were granted sole use of Southwood. The club folded in 1924 and Ramsgate Grenville took on the ground.

Football was once again shut down in East Kent when World War Two started and after hostilities ceased Grenville didn't reform with a new club, Ramsgate Athletic (mark 2!) took on Southwood. The 'Athletic' suffix was dropped in 1972 when the club began Simpley 'Ramsgate Football Club', as they remain today. Southwood's current capacity is 3,500, with approximately 500 of that number being seated.

The grounds record attendance was set in 1955 when local rivals Margate visited for the Isle of Thanet derby. The grounds highest crowd in recent times was the 3,000 who watched the Rams 2-1 victory against Woking in the 1st round of the FA Cup on 4 November 2023. The ground also saw a crowd of 2,563 on 13 April 2024 when Cray Valley Paper Mills visited in what was, essentially, an Isthmian League South East Division title decider. The game finished 2-2 and Cray Valley went on to win the title.
