Following a dispute with the owner of the ground, Rotherham United left Millmoor in 2008 and announced plans to build a new stadium within the town. A town centre site was identified and this was purchased in 2010. After spending 4 years playing in exile at the Don Valley Athletics Stadium in nearby Sheffield, the Millers returned to Rotherham in 2012 when the New York Stadium opened.

The capacity of the ground is 12,021 and the record attendance of 11,758 was set when local rivals Sheffield United visited for a third tier match on 7 September 2013.
