The Stoke City Stadium, more commonly known as the Bet365 Stadium (and formerly as the Britannia Stadium) was constructed as a 28,384 capacity all seater stadium during the 96/97 season and saw it's first match on 27 August 1997 when 15,439 watched a 1-1 draw with Rochdale in the first round (2nd leg) of the Football League Cup. The first league game took place the following Saturday when 23,859 watched Swindon take all three points with a 2-1 win in the second tier of English football. The record crowd with this configuration was the 28,218 who saw Everton move into the 4th round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win in January 2002.

By the summer of 2017, the south-east corner of the ground had been filled in, bringing the capacity up to 30,089 and enabling a new attendance record of 30,027 to be set, also for a defeat against Everton, but this time in a Premier League match held on 17 March 2018.

The stadium was officially opened in August 1997 by arguably the clubs most famous player, Sir Stanley Matthews. Following Sir Stanley's death on 23 February 2000, his ashes were interred under the centre circle of the stadium.
