The Gables is an early 20th century private house which became a nursing home in 1966 and subsequently saw several single storey extensions constructed to the rear to provide extra accommodation.
The house has been empty since Christmas Eve in 2013 when the nearby River Mole burst its banks and the fire service required the use of dinghy’s to rescue the residents after 2 feet of water entered the home. This was not the first time that the home had been hit by flooding; in November 2000 the house was besieged by floodwater up to 4ft deep and the home was flooded again, though to a lesser extent, in December 2008.
The house currently stands derelict and plans are afoot to demolish it and build a new nursing home.
