34 pictures: Newdigate to Stan Hill and back
22 July 2018

For todays ride we decided to load the bikes onto the back of the car and start from Newdigate in Surrey, so at 7:45 we pedaled off from next to the Six Bells pub heading eastwards past the 12th Century St Peters Church towards Cudworth. Unfortunately, the sun hadn't yet decided to show itself, but we still had reasonable views across towards Leith Hill from the rough private lane/bridleway that joins Partridge Lane to Newdigate. On reaching Partridge Lane, we went almost straight across into Beggarshouse Lane which is just now a narrow bridleway linking Partridge Lane to Stan Hill, but one can imagine that a couple of hundred years ago before the advent of the motor car it served as an important route linking Newdigate with Charlwood. The Ordnance Survey map of 1813 gives it prominence equal to routes that we now drive along.

At the end of Beggarshouse Lane, we turned north up towards Stanhill Court Hotel, did a quick circle of their driveway and headed down the footpath towards the 15th Century Highworth Farm. Unfortunately the access to the road was overgrown so we had to go back to the hotel driveway and follow the road round instead. We then headed back down Beggarshouse Lane, taking a slight detour and using the classiest stile I have ever seen - the was a mat attached to it, before turning south up the hill of Partridge Lane in order to reach Dukes Drive; a bridleway which links Partridge Lane with the Rusper to Newdigate Road (but isn't suitable for cars). Half way down Dukes Drive is the 14th century Home Farm, with its early 15th century barn.

On reaching the 'main' road, we turned south briefly to view a couple of old houses, including the 16th century Nyes Place, before turning round and heading back towards Newdigate. At Tan house farm, w etook the bridleway and then footpath up to Greens Farm, continuing northwards to Trigg Street from where we returned to Newdigate, past the old Village Stores and back to the car.
