The London to Brighton veteran car run
4 November 2018
Crawley High Street

The London to Brighton Veteran Car Run is the longest-running motoring event in the world. The first run, known as 'The Emancipation Run', was on 14 November 1896, and was a celebration by London car enthusiasts of a change in law. Prior to this date, cars were restricted to a speed of just 4mph and had to be preceeded by an escort, walking 20 yards ahead of the vehicle, waving a red flag. The new law removed the need for an escort and allowed vehicles to travel at up to 14mph.

It has taken place each year since its initial revival in 1927, with the exception of war years. To qualify, the cars must have been built before 1905. This year, there were a total of 605 entries.
