56 Pictures: A walk around the rural areas of south east Capel
30 November 2018

A day off work and there are bright blue skies, so what better way to spend three hours than taking a (just over) 5 mile walk around the southern eastern extremes of the Parish of Capel looking at old buildings and the early winter countryside. Having parked the car in a small side road in Vicarage Lane my first destination was Temple Eflande, a large house built in 1541, and it's old, but not quite so old, outbuildings at the end of Temple Lane, a little over a mile from my parking spot and just east of Rusper Golf Club. On the way I passed Aldhurst Farmhouse, an early 16th century hall house that is now the home to Dorking Brewery and Rushetts, another 16th century building. Leaving the lane and moving onto wet and soggy grass of the public footpath encircling Temple Eflande meant that my boots were soon breached by the water.

Returning back to Vicarage Lane and heading north along Misbrooks Green Road, I soon came to Misbrooks Farm, a 15th century hall house bordered by the public footpath which leads eastwards to Greens Farm, close to Newdigate. This was another wet and soggy walk and even featured a temporary river running across the path, but this wasn't entirely unwelcome given that I had managed to stand in what felt like about 37 cow pats and was conscious that my feet would soon be operating the pedals in my car! Climbing the hill to the north west of my destination, I was able to see the wooden spire of Newdigate Church, some two thirds of a mile to the north east. Greens Farm is a 14th century (they're getting older!) hall house with several outbuildings dating back to the 16th, 17th & 18th centuries and is now used as a wedding venue, though it still seems to be a working farm and also has a fishery.
