Ifield>Charlwood>Greenings>The Mount>Ifield
6 May 2020

I'd had this route planned for 18 months or so, specifically to try to source a decent photo of the 16th century house known as Greenings in the far north west of Charlwood Parish and, with the weather being nice, today seemed like an ideal day to do it.

Starting off from Whitehall Drive, we pedaled along Rusper Road and dived into the Brook Meadows along the small path close to where the mill race goes under Rusper Road and headed down to the church. From there we circled Ifield Green playing fields via Rectory Lane and made our way to Ifield Avenue via Ifield Green.

Just past the entrance to Ifield Court we turned right onto the public footpath to Charlwood which runs through the landing lights and took a break when we reached them. It seemed strange to spend 10 minutes there without seeing a single plane!

Having had our break, we resulted our ride and headed north towards Charlwood. Usually this path is quite overgrown, but rutted by the boots of far more walkers than usual it was very bumpy. Having crossed Mans Brook, it was a pleasant surprise to be able to see the 17th century Tifters Barn, normally hidden by trees, in the throes of renovation.

On arrival in Charlwood we had a short break by the war memorial before using the Tudor causeway which links the Half Moon to Rectory Lane and, more pertinently as far as our plans were concerned, provides access to Glovers Road.

At the end of Glovers Road we had a quick look at the old helicopters and fighter planes, before doubling back on ourselves for 200 yards to join the footpath beside Brook Cottage which leads around the northern edge of Glovers Wood and onto the fields to the south of Greenings.

Having taken the photos I wanted (and carried both of our bikes over countless stiles) we elected to head home via road, rather than than across country so made our way to Partridge Lane from where we could climb the gentle hill towards Orltons.

Having missed out a couple of miles of the originally planned off roading already, I had planned for us to join the Sussex Border path just before Orltons and head east to Russ Hill before descending to Prestwood Lane on the old bridleway. I was already minded to continue by road instead, but my mind was made up when I saw that the first field on the border path was currently home to cows, so we instead went down Orltons Lane to Peters Farm.

At the junction with The Mount we turned left, had a quick look at the views, picking out the Hospital & County Mall, and then descended Hillybarn Lane to Ifield Wood from where we headed back towards the golf club.
