Pondside Farm & Bewbush Mill
14 April 2022
These photos were taken during a short walk in search of any remains of Pondside Farm which stood just to the north of Bewbush Millpond (dry since the early 1940's and now disappearing under Kilnwood Vale) and was demolished in the late 1830s to make way for the forthcoming Arun Valley railway line.
We found no trace of any of the farm buildings, bar a couple of old broken bricks thrown up by the plough in an adjacent field. These fields, to north of the railway track, form part of the plan for the completed Kilnwood Vale estate. The fields do not appear to have been ploughed and sown yet; I wonder if this indicates that development is imminent or whether they are just having a year off.
The photos subsequent to the first railway track picture are at and around the site of Bewbush Furnace (c.1563-1642) and the later Bewbush Mill (c.1680 to c.1860 as a working mill, demolished 1931).
