A 7.5 mile walk in the Ifield Wood area

92 photos from a 7.5 mile, 4 hour walk from close to Ifield Golf course, past Druids into Ifield Wood and the common, along Prestwood Lane and back across the fields via Hillybarn Road. As well as the general scenery, features include a road that has been abandoned for over 110 years, a pond that has been abandoned for at least 180 years and a couple of long range photos of Crawley landmarks.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This is the abandoned road, presenting as a raised causeway across Ifield Common with a narrow, shallow ditch either side. On the map from 1895, below, the blue shows the modern Ifield to Charlwood Road and the red is Ifield Wood. The road highlighted in yellow is what we see here. There are no surviving features of the other roads shown on the map. The following lidar scan and four pictures show the bay (dam) of a pond just off Prestwood Lane that has been abandoned for at least 180 years. It does not appear on the earliest map that is detailed enough to show it (the Tithe Map of 1840) and it appears on no subsequent OS maps. There is no evidence that this was a working pond; there is no obvious spillway or working area and no visible iron slag in the area. The purpose of the pond will probably remain unknown. The pit seen to the west could be modern.
