Construction of the Crawley bypass (A23)
(1937)

Old Britain Home | Historic curiosities of Crawley

These pictures show the A23 Crawley bypass during the later stages of it's construction in 1937

The A23 joining the Brighton Road. To the left of the new road in the foreground you would now find the Broadfield Stadium. Looking down the road the roundabout is at Cheals, with Little Buckswood Farm just to the left of it. The tress just above the centre of the photograph are Goffs Park. The Half Moon pub is on the right of the photo

This shows Chealse roundabout on the left and the Ifield Road roundabout on the right (now a subway). The rolling hills in the foreground are now Southgate West and road road on the right is Goffs Park Road. Just past the rounabout you can see a little crossing at the end of what is now the OLD Horsham Road. This was the drive to Woldhurstlea from the East Lodge.

This picture shows the town centre in the bottom left corner with the new road running across the centre, ending at what is now Tushmore roundabout having passed through Ewhurst Wood (by what is now the Ifield Avenue Roundabout).
